As part of SI Centenary celebrations, (re)discover every month a project from the last ten years, carried out by SIE Unions and clubs.

Soroptimist Club of San Marino

The club of San Marino realized this collaborative project in Rwanda in the spirit of empowering women after a major conflict. The idea was to support local traditional craft techniques by applying them in modern jewelry design in order to sell them for profit.

The Soroptimists teamed up with the Department of Industrial Design at the University of San Marino to develop a method for creating jewelry from the art of traditional basket weaving.  Soroptimists from San Marino, teachers from the University, and members of the Luxemburg Union met with Soroptimists in Kigali to plan the project.  Training courses were then held in the San Marco Training Center in Kigali.  The work was later displayed at the “South Out There” exhibition in Venice through a partnership with the IUAV University of Venice.  A later exhibition was held in which the Heads of State – the two Captains Regent and the Minister of Culture were present.  This successful project offers a stunning example of creativity and collaboration.
